Here's a very little teaser...

 [...]

Hugh Grant as the best man from Four Weddings And A Funeral:

"This is only the second time I’ve been a best man. I hope I did OK that time. The couple in question is at least still talking to me. Unfortunately, they're not actually talking to each other. The divorce came through a couple of months ago. But I’m assured it had absolutely nothing to do with me. Paula knew Piers had slept with her sister before I mentioned it in the speech. The fact that he'd slept with her mother came as a surprise, but I think this was incidental to the nightmare of recrimination and violence that became their two-day marriage."

Chapter 1 - Luring Your Audience In

“Speak clearly, if you speak at all; carve every word before you let it fall.” Oliver Wendell Holmes

The first impression:

The most important and crucial part of the best man’s speech is the opening line (and the closing line, but we’ll get to that later). It’s very much like when you first lay eyes on someone – just how significant is that first impression? In your speech it’s going to determine whether people are going to pay you any attention or dread the remaining couple of minutes. What we want is to catch their attention so they anticipate your every word.

Once you have them lured in, the rest is going to be much easier and you’ll feel more confident and comfortable as the worst is over! But just ‘how’ do we lure everyone in without making fools of ourselves?

The best way of luring people in and grabbing their attention is by using some witty and humorous openers. Light-heartedness is the best way to start and it eases any tension you or your audience may be feeling (including the groom who’s probably panicking and worried about what you may have in store - e.g. he could be worried about embarrassing stories).

A few short speech openers:

• Ladies and Gentlemen, as Henry VIII once said to each of his wives, ‘I shall not keep you long’.

Chapter 3- Humor Turns Any Dull Moment Around

“The human race has but one really affective weapon, and that is laughter.” Mark Twain

Importance of Humor:

Humor is a priceless tool in any speech and although some people say humor isn’t for them I greatly disagree, I think humor is for everyone. Whether you’re tall, short, gloomy, dull, hyper, spontaneous or fun– who can’t learn a joke or two? As long as you can utter words out of your mouth, you have the potential and ability to bring humor into your speech.

Humor is not only generally essential in various speeches but it is required and expected of the best man to excel in adding the perfect touches of humor throughout his entire speech.

Everyone’s waiting on the best man speech to be different and unique from the rest and the laughter the best man usually brings to the wedding is what distinguishes (and characterizes) the best man speech from all the rest.

Chapter 5 - Don’t be Shaking (or sweating!)

[...]

Remember to always smile! How hard could smiling really be? Yet the effect of a smile is enormous; a smile is interpreted into a lot of confidence and helps present you as a cheerful, confident and high spirited person.

You need to build on yourself.
You don’t need to transform magically into someone else.

“Yesterday is but a dream and tomorrow only a vision. But, today well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a dream of hope.” Indian Poem

Exercise 1:

Take a piece of paper and draw a vertical line in the middle. You now have two columns, one for how you think you’ll do in the speech (negative points), and this could include definite mistakes you think you’ll make. In the second column, write down everything you think will make your speech perfect.

Now compare the two lists and highlight the main problems that you need to overcome. Work extra hard on them because when you feel you’re overcome them, you really have overcome them and the rush of relief you will feel will boost your confidence.

Award yourself whenever you think you’ve overcome an obstacle.  Say, you fidget a lot, you did a mock speech in front of two co-workers and you didn’t fidget at all – this definitely deserves a reward.
